A Boy And His Dog by Greg Boudle

Two lights shone on the world one day
Souls united til the reaper calls
Wet puppy kisses and a toothless smile
Open a mother’s heart

She watches them play with a protective eye
Running through golden fields
Splashing in a frigid stream
Together in a tireless dance

She barely remembers a life before
Thinks not of days to come
For this too shall pass
But surely not on this day

Seasons pass as they always have
Smiles fade with the setting sun
The once young furry light
Gives his last wet kiss

A mother’s cry rings to the sky
Knowing both lights have vanished
A young man wipes a tear
And journeys forth alone
